My guess is just luck as sometimes auto-fishing do give you bigger fish than doing it manually. This type of things is kinda of... hard to "test".
However, if you want to try for bigger fishes the Metal Toolkit have a bonus that will increase that, which should come out in G15 and help with that a bit.
