Aww, bummer. At least there's the option to buy NPC bullets, so it's not super-annoying like a certain puppet upkeep system I could mention. :p

I love my fluffy, my master colossus puppet, it keeps me safe and plays with all the monsters for me:D if your good at your skills it shouldn't get that much damage and if so cloud it.

enchant enabled regardless of rank.
With that enchant and +2 attack from viscount boots, you're good to go.
I am not sure how difficult it is to obtain the enchant.
If anything, now is the perfect time to make your gunner skill.

Assuming the wiki is accurate, 176 from skills, with the majority coming from Dual Gun Mastery (51) and Reload. (45)
